Whitfield Gardens,
Tottenham Court Road, London
Rejuvenating a Central London Pocket Park
The comprehensive rejuvenation of Whitfield Gardens just off Tottenham Court Road stands as a flagship public realm achievement of Camden Council’s West End Project—one of the largest civic regeneration and transport schemes ever undertaken in Central London.
Redesigned by leading landscape architects LDA Design with lighting design by Michael Grubb Studio, the transformation restores the historic Fitzrovia Mural, reclaims civic pedestrian space, and introduces rich urban biodiversity into one of London’s highest-density corridors. Architape IP67 architectural linear systems were integrated to provide warm, human-scale illumination that invites socialising and ensures intuitive nighttime wayfinding.
Floating Granite Seating & Low-Level Glow
Michael Grubb Studio deployed concealed Architape Opaline IP67 linear luminaires beneath the solid granite bench perimeters and retaining walls.
The light grazes downward across natural stone textures to create an inviting ‘floating’ visual effect, defining public circulation routes without resorting to tall, glare-inducing lampposts.
Inclusive After-Dark Placemaking
Pocket parks are essential in connecting busy city workers and local communities with nature.
The warm white LED scheme balances ambient security with peaceful tranquility, ensuring the gardens transition seamlessly into an active outdoor venue for community gatherings, lunchtime respite, and evening events.
