Canal Turn,
The Island Quarter, Nottingham
Industrial Heritage Reborn on the Canalside
Canal Turn marks the inaugural landmark phase of Nottingham’s transformative 36-acre Island Quarter masterplan. Designed by architects Jestico + Whiles, the multi-tiered canal-side destination pays homage to Nottingham’s rich industrial heritage, housing two signature restaurants (Binks Yard and Cleaver & Wake), an intimate 200-capacity event hall, an outdoor performance stage, and an expansive 1,000-capacity public realm amphitheatre courtyard.
To seamlessly connect the vibrant interior hospitality venues with the historic waterside promenade, Studio Fractal devised a cohesive lighting strategy anchored in an ultra-warm 2500K colour temperature. Utilizing Architape’s versatile Opaline IP67-rated architectural linear systems, the lighting accentuates the textured red-brick masonry, provides intimate illumination across bar counters, and safely guides pedestrian movement throughout the public plaza.
2500K Warmth Across Bars & Dining
In both Binks Yard and Cleaver & Wake, custom-length Opaline luminaires are integrated into bar dies, fluted timber joinery, and back-bar display shelving.
The tailored 2500K CCT bathes patrons, cocktail stations, and warm timber surfaces in a flattering, golden ambience that elevates the dining experience from daytime cafe trade to late-night lounge cocktails.
Red-Brick Masonry & Canal Promenade
Outside along the canal terrace and public amphitheatre, IP67-sealed Opaline fittings wash the traditional red brickwork and define pedestrian walkways.
The robust water-resistant engineering and UV-stabilized encapsulation ensure long-term durability in Nottingham’s damp waterside environment while harmonising the visual temperature with interior glazing.
