Pareidolia,
Clerkenwell Design Week 2019
Exploring Movement, Memory & Concealed Illumination
Exploring the profound psychological concepts of movement and memory, Pareidolia is an experimental large-scale immersive installation created for Clerkenwell Design Week 2019. Constructed from a continuous linear procession of 45 freestanding structural fins, each fin is integrated with three precision lighting fittings that animate the sculpture with kinetic, breathing illumination.
Rather than directly displaying the light source, the installation employs an innovative indirect optical strategy: 135 Opaline M RGB luminaires project light outward toward thin, specular metal reflector strips embedded within each fin. The resulting reflection produces a perfectly uniform, indirect gradient of colour washing softly across the fin surfaces with zero visible diode glare.
Concealed Reflection & Seamless Gradients
By projecting light away from the spectator and bouncing it back via precision micro-reflectors, the installation achieves an intangible, floating visual aesthetic.
Each Opaline M RGB luminaire provides exceptional colour mixing and homogenous output, allowing sophisticated choreographed sequences to sweep across all 45 fins as a single, coherent digital canvas.
Rhythmic Chromatic Animation
The repetitive rhythm of the 45 fins interacts with human perception, creating shifting illusory shapes and patterns as viewers walk alongside—giving physical reality to the psychological phenomenon of pareidolia.
The high refresh rate and precision digital DMX control ensured that fast fades, smooth waves, and delicate pastel transitions rendered without stutter or flicker.
