Artist’s Bar, Royal Albert Hall, London

Lighting a Classic

Few venues in the world hold the cultural weight and emotional resonance of the Royal Albert Hall. While audiences experience its grandeur from the stalls and balconies, performers encounter it first in the quieter backstage spaces that support each performance. One of the most important of these is the Artists Bar – a place to prepare, decompress, and reconnect once the curtain falls.

Reopened in December 2025 following a major refurbishment by BDP, the Artists Bar reimagines a once-overlooked industrial space as a refined, intimate retreat. Central to this transformation is a carefully layered lighting scheme delivered using Architape lighting solutions. Flexible, discreet, and precisely controlled, the Architape range enabled the design team to balance atmosphere, function, and heritage within a uniquely sensitive setting.

Lighting within the Artists Bar needed to work hard without ever drawing attention to itself. It had to complement rich materials, respond to different times of day and performance cycles, and sit comfortably within the historic fabric of the building. Architape provided the adaptability and visual restraint required to achieve this.

The bar counter forms the social heart of the space and is brought to life with Architape Opaline Flex SB 10W 3000K. Integrated seamlessly into the joinery, this flexible linear solution emits a soft, uniform warm glow that accentuates the veining of the marble and the depth of the timber finishes. The result is a welcoming focal point that immediately grounds the room in warmth and calm.

Behind the bar, shelving and display areas are subtly highlighted using A005M luminaires fitted with Architape Pro 100 5W 3000K LED tape. These compact, precise accents add visual interest and depth, animating bottles and glassware without creating glare. The lighting enhances texture and sparkle while remaining understated – perfectly suited to a space designed for performers rather than spectacle.

In the seating areas, atmosphere and flexibility take priority. Opaline Flex TW Side B has been installed within coves above the seating to deliver tuneable white illumination.

This allows the lighting to adapt effortlessly throughout the day: cooler, more energising tones before performances, and warmer, softer light for post-show relaxation.

To further extend creative control, concealed lighting layers sit behind the seating using a blend of Architape Pro 100 TW2 and Architape Pro 100 RGB. These elements establish a refined ambient base while allowing colour and tone to be introduced for special events, celebrations, or private functions – all without disturbing the elegance of the interior architecture.

Architectural features above are gently articulated with individual A005M luminaires housing Architape Pro 100 TW2. These discreet highlights provide spatial definition and visual comfort, subtly guiding the eye through the room while maintaining a cohesive, uncluttered ceiling plane.

Circulation spaces were treated with the same level of care. Along the staircase, A018N luminaires incorporating Architape Pro 175 LED tape deliver integrated step lighting that ensures safe movement while remaining visually quiet. The slimline format allows the lighting to disappear into the architecture, reinforcing the calm, considered flow of the space.

The refurbished Artists Bar now stands as a testament to how considered lighting can elevate a space without overwhelming it. Using the versatility of Architape, the project demonstrates how light can be supportive, atmospheric, and adaptable – enhancing heritage architecture while creating a contemporary sanctuary where performers can pause, recharge, and celebrate their craft.
